Dear Mumtaz, Here's the "bottom line" first, with its explanation just below: We urge everyone to call Congressman Peter King's Washington office on TUESDAY, FEB. 22, at 202/225-7896. If you can't get through there, call his home office on Long Island, NY, at 516/541-4225. Tell whoever answers the phone that you want to register your opinion about the hearings in which he plans to revile Islam in America. Identify yourself and when they ask for your views, or if you are put on voicemail, just read them George Washington's words above. Let Freedom Ring!
Why do this, Mumtaz? Tuesday is George Washington's birthday. Though -- ignobly -- he owned slaves, he also left some noble legacies to American freedom. Among the noblest was the words above, written to the "Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island," which had written him to ask what role Jews would have under the new Constitution. (The First Amendment, guaranteeing freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and the press, was not adopted till December 1791.)
Congressman Peter King of Long Island, NY, the new chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, has called hearings to begin March 7 on the role of Islam in America. He has already stated that there are too many mosques in America and that 80% of American mosques are led by "radical imams." He is doing precisely what Washington promised would not happen: he is sanctioning bigotry and assisting persecution toward the Muslim community who, like Jews, are of the "stock of Abraham."
That is why we are asking you to call his office TUESDAY. Let freedom ring his phone! And we encourage you to share this message from The Shalom Center with your friends, co-workers, and fellow-congregants.
