Veterans, Immigrants to Occupy Obama campaign HQ Saturday

Two of the most marginalized groups in the 99 percent will make their voices heard during a national day of action Saturday

Des Moines, Iowa - December 10, 2011

Saturday, December 17 is the three-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement and a national day of action, and Occupy Des Moines will partner with veterans and immigrants to occupy President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters.

Occupy Des Moines will partner with Veterans for Peace and Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (Iowa CCI) to put pressure on President Obama to end deportations of undocumented workers and the war in Afghanistan.  Obama's so-called "Secure Communities" program has deported millions of undocumented immigrants in the last several years, ripping hardworking families apart.  Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan, leading to more troop injuries and loss of life.  Both Secure Communities and the war in Afghanistan are draining vital resources of the country that could be better spent providing jobs, education, housing, and healthcare to everyday people.

Elliot Adams, the national president of Veterans for Peace, will lead a delegation to Obama's campaign headquarters on 621 East 2nd Street at 11:30am.  A busload of immigrant members of Iowa CCI will converge on Obama's office around 2:30pm.

Some people will risk arrest at Saturday's action.

Adams will speak about how the permanent war economy negatively impacts the 99 percent by draining away resources from unmet social needs here at home on Friday, December 16, at 7:30pm at the Iowa CCI statewide headquarters, 2001 Forest Avenue.

The coordinated day action with Veterans for Peace and Iowa CCI is part of Occupy Des Moines’ "Occupy Iowa Caucus" campaign .  Saturday, December 17 marks the three-month anniversary of the start of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
