On the eve of the NATO Summit meets at McCormick Place in Chicago we will gather at the People's Church on 941 West Lawrence from Friday morning through Saturday.  Our Counter-Summit for Peace & Economic Justice, with itsU.S.and international plenary speakers and 28 workshops, will help people in our communities understand NATO’s new role as a global military alliance fighting wars like those inAfghanistanandLibya, as well as the challenges of economic globalization and the need to move the money from Pentagon spending.

While heads of state plan forU.S.and NATO forces to remain and fight inAfghanistanfor a decade beyond 2014, we will be working on campaigns to bring the troops home and to create a future free of wars, occupation and the costs of a militarized foreign policy.  The conference will bring together representatives of the 99% from theUSand around the world who are organizing to change policies that generate wars and impoverish our communities.

With four plenaries and twenty-eight workshops, the following is only a small and representative list of speakers:

  • Phyllis Bennis directs the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) in Washington, DC. She is also a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam.
  • Roger Cole:  Chair of the Irish Peace & Neutrality Alliance and member of the No to NATO/No to War International Coordinating Committee.
  • Sarita Gupta: Executive Director of Jobs with Justice.
  • Tom Hayden:  Director of the Peace and Justice Resource Center, contributing editor of The Nation, former member of the California State Assembly and lead author of the Port Huron statement.
  • Tobias Pflüger:  executive committee member ofGermany’s Left Party, a board member of Ruebingen Militarization Information, and was a member of the European Parliament 2004 – 2009.
  • Vijay Prashad: George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and Professor of International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
