Sponsored by the Progressive Coalition of Central Iowa, which lists these 10 reasons why there should be a “standing room only” crowd to greet Cindy Sheehan on Mother’s Day.
It’s caucus time--progressive peacemakers need Cindy’s reinforcement.
Among her credentials: Graduated with honors from Cerritos College, studied history at UCLA, worked as a youth minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vacaville, CA., coordinated an after-school program for at-risk middle school children for the City of Vacaville, mother of four children including Casey, born in 1979 and killed in action in Iraq, April 4, 2004.
She is the living embodiment of the original intent for Mother’s Day—a protest against war. In 2006 she helped organize a Mother’s Day protest against war in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House.
Donated Casey’s boots to the AFSC traveling display of combat boots.
One of nine founding members of Gold Star Families for Peace.
Created a makeshift camp (Camp Casey) in a ditch by the side of the road near President Bush’s Crawford, TX, ranch to protest the Iraq war and donated the five acres she purchased to Crawford, TX, for a Casey Sheehan Memorial Peace Park.
At a Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield, Vermont, she called for the impeachment of President Bush and ending the war.
The world is her parish! From Europe to South America to Australia, etc., she has witnessed her faith including a protest in Oslo Norway when Barack Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.
In the tradition of Iowa’s Peg Mullen (Friendly Fire), she honors her son by working for peace.
In the tradition of Daniel Ellsberg (Pentagon Papers) she champions honesty and opposes the secrecy, progaganda and lies used to justify illegal wars.
In the tradition of Martin Luther King (Letter from the Birmingham Jail, I Have a Dream, ant the Riverside Church Sermon) she “puts her body where her mouth is” and risks arrest.
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
