Boy Scout Jonah Reardon, 12, will be screening a 90-minute documentary about how post-traumatic stress disorder is affecting the soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan at 10 a.m. Nov. 24 at the La Grange Theatre.
The movie is called "On the Bridge" by Olivier Morel. Immediately following the screening there will be a discussion of the movie with snacks and refreshments at the La Grange Public Library in the Dierkes meeting room on the lower level.
Jerome McDonnell, radiohost of Worldview, from the Chicago PBS station, WBEZ, will moderate the discussion and provide additional insights. Singer/songwriter Jason Moon, who's music and life is featured in the movie will perform some songs at the discussion and tell about ways that the community can help. Also present will be Cmd Sgt Mjr Mark Bowman to speak to PTSD effects in the Reserves and National Guard.
The movie and discussion are free, but donations are being accepted and will be given to the Robert E. Coulter Jr., Post 1941, The American Legion in La Grange which provides many services to the local veterans.
The goal of the event is to spread the word about the growing epidemic of PTSD, depression and suicide among active duty soldiers and returning Veterans from the wars in the Middle East. The National Suicide hotline receives over 1500 calls per day from veterans on the edge of suicide. The rate of actual documented suicides has risen to 87 per day, which translates to a veteran committing suicide every 17 minutes. These men need our help. Come to the event to hear their story and to learn how you can make a difference.
Help keep these guys from killing themselves. Please announce this event. Talk it up.
