Social Security Workshops
Communicating directly with people in your community about the importance of Social Security is a valuable way to help save Social Security from being weakened. Just follow the simple steps below to host a workshop in your community:
Step 1: Identify People to Do the Workshop With
If you belong to a group or organization like a neighborhood association, union, faith group or other, ask the leader of the group if you can hold a workshop at the next meeting. If you don’t belong to a group, just invite your friends, family and neighbors to your house and do the workshop there. Once you have identified a group of people, use our sample invitation flyer to send them all of the details. Download your copy here (PDF) and add your contact information at the bottom.
Step 2: Read the Workshop Outline and Print Materials
Once you have a group of people coming to your workshop, download and print all of the materials. Then, start reading them. You should begin with either the one-hour or two-hour workshop outline depending on which one you prefer to do. The rest of the materials you will need are described in the outline and can be found in our action kit.
Step 3: Make Reminder Calls
After you have sent out the workshop invitation flyer, try to make phone calls to everyone whose number you have the night before the workshop to remind them to attend.
Step 4: Good Luck!
Hold the workshop and let the discussion, knowledge and empowerment flow!
Step 5: Follow-up
After the workshop, make sure to call people who said they wanted to help out. You can train them in how to hold a workshop or go out together on a weekend to get signatures for the petition, pass out flyers, write letters to the editor of your paper, join a local coalition and more.
Workshop materials
Download each of the items below (requires Acrobat Reader, available as a free download), or call for assistance.
See the online tool kit. Once there, you will need to print the Social Security FAQs, the Social Security as a moral issue flyer as well as the petition. The rest of the materials there are intended for you to use to educate yourself and fill in background details on Social Security. Print as many of these additional materials as you feel comfortable.
