Tax Day Statement delivered to Sen. Roy Blunt.

The statement reminds Sen. Blunt that, "There is not a need for “austerity.” The causes of our economic problems are:

On April 4, 2012, AFSC joined with 75 other groups and individuals asking President Obama to announce that the United States will accede to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty.

During our work with students, AFSC has been witness to increasingly well organized and well funded efforts to silence student speech in support of Palestinian rights. Forms of intimidation have included name calling, death threats, physical attacks, and legal actions.  AFSC and 12 other organizations are now speaking out, affirming the First Amendment rights of students to speak on these issues.

Whether in the United States or in the other 14 nations where we worked in 2011, we supported people at the community level, working in partnership with local leaders and communities as friends and allies. Their concerns define our work; their goals decide our plan of action; their
confidence and awareness of their own resources tell us when our work is progressing. And their knowledge, experience, and viability let us know when AFSC is no longer needed.

In fiscal year 2011, we saw improvements large and small in many communities.

  • I was reminded that sometimes it is enough, “To do the next right thing.”
  • We have to heal ourselves and make sure that we are in a place where we can give that out.
  • I am still digesting.
  • Listening is coupled with a responsibility to act.
  • Love is the most important thing.
  • We are connected with each other and with a much broader community. We have the responsibility to share and see the love we can.
  • If we enhance inner peace, it helps us to be in a better place to be empowered.
  • This work that we do, it is really about transformation.
  • Everyone has ideas.
  • We already have self-determination. It is a part of us and cannot be separated from us.
  • Look in the mirror and see the love of God.
  • Working in community building on our relationships is a powerful recognition of our values.
  • This process of listening is a good way to really hear different voices.
  • I felt many things. I felt vulnerable and cared for and hopeful.

This is the second in a series of reports monitoring the growing problem of wage theft in Florida by the Center for Labor Research and Studies at Florida International University's Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy.  The report uses information from AFSC's work on wage theft in South Florida along with previously unanalyzed data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, and other community organizations.

Chandra Russo is working on her PhD in Sociology at the University of California in Santa Barbara. Having spent some of her formative years in Denver as a member of CFIR (Coloradans for Immigrant Rights, AFSC’s ally project), she gives much credit to both CFIR and the AFSC for much of her current analysis of social justice and immigrant rights.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the QUNO Review 2011.

This is the first jointly produced QUNO Review and covers the work of both QUNO offices in New York and Geneva. It also presents other Quaker work at the United Nations.

We have worked steadily to bring Quaker peace and justice concerns to international processes, focusing on the areas of peacebuilding and armed conflict, human rights and refugees, and global economic justice.
