In response to the recent Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) raids across the region, immigrant rights advocates brought communities together for a candlelight vigil Friday evening, Dec. 15. Community members joined hands in support of the families that have been torn apart by the callous six state immigration raids and speak out in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. The recent raids were featured in this photo essay from the Rocky Mountain News.

"We need to stop these ICE Raids, stop the systematic terrorizing of our children, and stop the criminalizing of our communities," says Lisa Durán, Director of Rights for All People. "We need to start looking at real solutions that will serve our communities, our economy and our families." Read more about AFSC's call for a moratorium on ICE raids.

Immigrant rights advocates are calling for immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship, unites families, reduces travel restrictions, lessens the visa backlog, provides worker protections, and allows for future flows of immigrants to the U.S. "We will be communicating to our elected officials their responsibility to represent our entire communities. We hope that in the new session, the new leadership will listen to the needs of our communities and support the rights of immigrants and their families," says Gabriela Flora, Project Voice Regional Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee.

In Denver, youth, faith leaders and families impacted by the ICE raids at the Swift & Co. meat packing plant gathered at St. Cajetan's Church on the Auraria Campus. The raid which occurred on the Virgin of Guadalupe's Day and has impacted an estimated 500 children. Vigil attendees helped bring back the spirit of the holidays as vigil attendees by making monetary contributions to ease the hardship on the families in Greeley.

Speakers included a representative for Arch Bishop Chaput, Fr. Jorge De Los Santos the Vicar for Hispanic Ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver, students from Jovenes Unidos and other community leaders. This event is in coordination with vigils held in other cities across the state of Colorado including Greeley, Ft. Collins and Durango.
