Introducing Youth Empowerment Program Director Farajii Muhammad

Since 1999, Farajii Muhammad has been working in the youth development field. As co-founder, president and spokesman for the youth-governed organization, New Light Leadership Coalition (now New Learninig Leadership Center) he often worked to develop young leaders, connect youth to resources, and bridge the gap between youth and local government. Plus, as a social entrepreneur, Farajii has used his passion for young people to stand as a voice for youth, advocate for their concerns, and an example of a leader and community servant.

Reverse the Power Festival - Youth Speak Out Video

Youth who participated in the 2014 Social Change Institute spoke out about the need for social change and what they learned in the training.

The Institute was organized by the Kansas City Program of the American Friends Service Committee and took place from June 9 through June 20. The Institute's goals were to empower youth, increase their knowledge and skills of nonviolent social change and deepen their commitments to work for a better community and world.

Youth Social Change Institute – Changed Us All

We were proud of the work AFSC did with KC area youth in our Social Change Institute and inspired by the work of the fifteen youth who whole-heartedly participated. We set out to create an environment where all ideas were respected and differences were embraced. We sought to have the youth deepen their understanding of and confront the injustices of our community and the power structures that create so much suffering in the world.

Conversations about Race and Equity

Our world views, as well as opportunities that are available, depend on our background.  Definitions of peace, education and equality change according to the experiences of those defining the words. One factor that affects the way we live and relate to each other is race. Although it is not always a primary focus, the American Friends Service

Committee’s commitment to the dignity and worth of each person frequently fosters work on the complicated issues of racism and inequity.
