Rivers flowing down Merapi have been silted up by volcanic matter. The resulting shallow river beds makes them very prone to overflowing with "cold lava" when there is a heavy rain.

Thunderous rumbling sounds were heard as far as the city of Yogyakarta where AFSC’s Indonesia office is located.  AFSC staff immediately went into action to support local relief efforts.

Not only is BP destroying the Gulf, but it's transporting dirty tar sands for refining on the shores of Lake Michigan as well. What happened?  How did BP shift from being the "cleaner" of the energy companies, to *this*?
It's time we start asking the hard questions and demanding real answers:
* Why were federal regulations ignored? And who in government allowed this?

Hurricane Human Rights Abuse Documentation Training

Everyday immigrants suffer human rights abuses due to federal and local immigration enforcement.  Making those stories heard is the first step toward change.

Through recording, monitoring, and disseminating stories, we demonstrate the injustice of current policies. The HURRICANE initiative allows communities to analyze the challenges they face, develop a stronger shared analysis, and determine their own demands for just policy change.

Nerete camp on the grounds of the Italian embassy (800 people).

With funding from AFSC, 4,600 square meters of plastic sheeting for tents will make its way to Haiti.  The sheeting will provide emergency shelter for at least 1,300 homeless families.
