The right direction: Deferred action policy is not the final word for Dreamers

Iowa DREAMers visited the state capitol on March 20 to thank state senators for co-sponsoring a bill allowing them to pay in-state tuition at state universities. They also spoke with legislators still opposed to bill or on the fence. See more photos.

In June 2012, President Obama announced that immigrant youth who meet certain qualifications can apply for work permits through a program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Though this is a step in the right direction, more change is needed to create a just immigration system for young people.

Ice cream social brings Iowans together

A cool building, tasty ice cream and good work brought 75 Iowans together on August 24th for the second annual Friends House Ice Cream Social in Des Moines. This year's gathering featured this video about the work of the tenants of the building as well as tours of Friends House, home to AFSC's Central Regional office since 1953.

Iowa Methodists and friends speak out for peace at their second annual peace and justice event. Bishop Julius Trimble helped gather these good people to say loud and clear that war is not the way to peace. End war now. Now is the time to speak out to government officials and tell them Bring the Troops Home. End the support of endless war. Use the dollars for the good of people and the earth, NOT destruction and violence!

Eloise Cranke and Chet Guinn stand by the rededicated Peace Garden in Nollen Plaza in Des Moines. Eloise is a former AFSC regional director who works with the Methodist Federation for Social Action. Chet Guinn is a retired Methodist pastor who has led efforts to revitalize the Peace Garden.

 Time: 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The long awaited revised plan for Nollen Plaza  designed by New York architect Ken Smith for the Greater Des Moines Civic Center will be unveiled for public response at two identical meetings at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm in the Stoner Theater:
