Responding to Humanitarian Crises

AFSC views humanitarian relief as an extension of our work on Peacebuilding and Economic Justice.  We strive to help people maintain their dignity, and rebuild peaceful and vibrate communities.

At the close of World War I, the AFSC stayed on in Europe to run extensive feeding programs in Germany and Austria that saved untold thousands of lives. In the following decades, through famines, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods, we have provided direct assistance such as food, medicines and medical services, shelter, and social services. Tons of donated goods were sorted, packed and transported to far-off places and to stricken communities here at home.

As approaches to international aid have changed in recent years, AFSC has adapted by working with partner agencies located in the affected area, and by responding to disasters with short-term help and a long-term commitment. Programs are designed with grassroots input, to take into consideration local customs and relationships, and are focused on rebuilding peaceful communities.  That means equitable access to resources, education, and the means to restore economic vitality.
