Arizona Sentencing
Action Network
Welcome to the Arizona Sentencing Action Network!
What are the first steps I should take?
1. If you
decide that you want to be a member of the Action Network, the first
thing you should do, if you haven’t already is register
to vote. Legislators are simply less inclined to listen
to people who don’t vote. You can get a voter registration
form at your public library, city or county government offices,
or even the Motor Vehicles Department. We can also send you a voter
registration form (just send us an email with your address). All
you have to do is fill it out and mail it. There is no fee. Your
voter registration card will be sent to you in the mail.
2. Join up! To join the Arizona Sentencing Action Network, click
here .
Just send us your name, address, phone number and your legislative
district (if you know it—see below). We will add you to the
list!
3. Find out your state legislative district
and representatives. Legislators are often more inclined to listen to voters from their
district. If you don’t know your district, all you have to
do is go to: www.azleg.state.az.us. This is ALIS, the official website
of the Arizona State Legislature, and it’s a great source
of information. On the top left side of the screen, under “The
Latest,” click on “How do I find my legislators?” It
will take you to another webpage. In the top right corner, under
the words “Interim 2004 Legislative Map,” enter your
address and zip code, then hit “find.” On the next page
that pops up, in the top left, it should say, “Address found!” The
first line is your US Congressional District (this is for your representatives
in Washington, DC). The next two lines are for your state legislative
district. If you haven’t already, please
send us an email letting us know what district you are in.
If you are having trouble using the web to find out your district,
just call the office at 520-623-9141 and we can help you. Once
you know your district, you can go back to the ALIS webpage and
look up your representatives by clicking on “Members.” Then
look and see which members represent your district. Remember: each
district has one Senator and two Representatives.
4. Spread the word. If you know someone who might be interested
in being part of the Sentencing Action Network, forward this message
to them and tell them to send us an email to sign up! Remember,
more members means more power!
