Tips for a successful phone call to a legislator

Thanks to: Protect Arizona's Families Coalition (PAFCO):www.pafcoalition.org

1. BE PREPARED! Write an outline of what you are going to say ahead of time.

2. You will most likely not get a chance to talk to the legislator him/herself. You will probably just leave a message with their assistant. The assistant will then record your message. The legislator will get a pile of slips and count how many were for and how many were against a certain bill. Always be nice to the assistant. This person has more power than you may realize (and besides, it's good manners!)

3. Urge the legislator to take action ("Vote no on SB1999"). As the secretary how the legislator will vote on the bill. If he or she doesn't know, ask for someone to get back to you and let you know how they will vote.

4. Be prepared to call back to do follow-up. If you don't hear back in a few days to a week, call again.

5. Call or email the Arizona Sentencing Action Network and let us know what you learned. This is especially important if you found out how the legislator is going to vote on a bill. Just call or send an email to let us know what you found out.
