Outmates
Outmates has a new home! The KARE Family
Center is an organization that works primarily with people who are
raising a family member's child or children. Often people
are in this situation because the child's parent is incarcerated. KARE
and AFSC, along with many other organizations, have been collaborating
on the Children of Incarcerated Parents project through Pima Prevention
Partnership.
That group recently applied for and received a grant to work with
children and families of incarcerated people. They are
interested in creating a support group, and together we decided
it made sense for them to take over running the Outmates support
group.
The purpose of the group will be the same: To help
family members get support and information they need to cope with
their loved one's imprisonment.
But KARE has the resources to make it even better. They will
provide a licensed counselor to help people who are struggling with
the emotional impact of the situation. They will also be able
to hold meetings weekly, not just once a month. This means
the topics will be more in-depth and participants will have more
chances to have their questions answered. It also means that
the group will be able to provide better support, because it is
a resource people can count on to be there every week. They
will meet every Thursday from 7:00-8:30.
We at AFSC are somewhat sad to see Outmates leave our building,
but we are so glad it will be able to continue meeting and to grow
and develop as a program. We are confident that this new home
of Outmates will be the best one for everyone involved.
The Criminal Justice program here will continue to focus on the
bigger issues of prison reform and do advocacy on behalf of prisoners,
former prisoners, and their families. We have a lot of work
ahead of us in our campaign to stop the state from building more
prisons and instead pass reforms that reduce prison populations,
emphasize rehabilitation and treatment, and explore alternative
sentences.
