About the Vendor
The women’s textile group Bordadoras Unidas de la Cuenca del Gusano (United Embroiderers of El Gusano) was formed in 1999 as a way to address adult literacy as group members learn new skills. This strategy has been important in forming leaders within the community and organizing residents for community development purposes. The Bordadoras Unidas create and sell hand-embroidered shawls, tablecloths, place settings, linen napkins, and dresses in order to add to the family income. Their participation in the Women and Fair Trade sale will be their first international event.
About Their Community
El Gusano is a community of approximately 60 families near Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, México. Within the community there is a high level of migration to the United States and limited access to educational opportunities, healthcare services, and wage-earning activities. Local residents are heavily dependent upon remittances from the United States; the majority of which are used to build or improve homes.
