Peace Building

“Peace is not only the absence of war, but the intention of building peaceful communities by promoting economic justice.” - Josefina Castillo, Program Coordinator, AFSC-Austin office.

AFSC-Austin has conducted peace and justice programs for over 50 years. The Austin office was instrumental in organizing against the Vietnam War and against U.S. intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, AFSC-Austin continues to bear witness to the Quaker Peace Testimony, addressing both the causes and effects of violence and oppression.

Highlighting the Human Cost of War

Eyes Wide Open

Remembrance: AFSC-Austin hosted the Eyes Wide Open Exhibit: The Human Cost of the Iraq War, which has toured the country since January 2004. Read more about this and other Program Highlights.

The Austin office hosts distinguished speakers to discuss the legacies of war, both past and present. In 2005, we commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings with a speech by Dr. Satoru Konishi, a Hiroshima survivor.

Community Action: AFSC offices nationwide are working to mobilize public support for an end to the war in Iraq. The Austin office sends out Iraq Action Alerts, organizes peace rallies, and covers peace initiatives in our quarterly newsletter, Sojourn.

AFSC-Austin often partners with local activists, faith and community groups in peace initiatives. Likewise, the Austin office supports the efforts of local Quakers working to bring about peace and justice, both at home and abroad.

SOA Watch: AFSC - Austin is also a member of the School of the Americas Watch (SOAW) that organizes the annual caravan to Ft. Benning, Georgia. For more information about joining the caravan download the brochure (PDF, 159 KB).

Creating peaceful communities is an ongoing endeavor, one that each generation must renew. Today, AFSC is supporting the Comité Fronterizo de Obrer@s as they defend workers rights and weave the underlying fabric of peaceful communities in Mexican border towns. Read more…
