The African
Continent
The African continent is
more than three times the United States in
size. As of 2003, there are 54 African
countries that are members either of the United
Nations or the African Union, formerly the
Organization of African Unity (OAU). Western
Sahara, occupied by Morocco, is a member of the
African Union but not the UN. Morocco left the
OAU to protest this decision. More

Africa and the
World
There are tens of millions of
recent African immigrants outside the continent
today, including more than a million in the
United States. Many play leadership roles in
global institutions, such as the United
Nations, and in the countries where they now
live. This global diaspora is an integral part
of African reality. (PDF)

Africa Issues in
the News
In the U.S. media
coverage of the issues that effect regions and
countries on the African Continent is very
limited.
As part of our goal to build a well-informed Africa focused constituency we have created a weekly digest of African news and updates as well as a African debt cancellation and the U.S.-based Africanist community alert list.
